More Details about Project NEW

What is project NEW?

Answer:

NABFOUNDATION’s Project NEW (Northeast-region Entrepreneurs’ World) is a first-ever, tech-based initiative to map the livelihood aspirations of the youth in all eight states of North-east India.

Who is the target audience for project NEW?

Answer:

Project NEW aims to target the youth of the North-east who possess a clear vision about what they want to do in terms of setting up a start-up, a business venture, a collective idea or any other livelihood option but do not have the required skillsets or access to formal credit support to set up the same.

Why is project NEW being undertaken?

Answer:

Though abundant in resources, the North-east Region (NER) remains far behind its true potential in terms of livelihood and employment opportunities.
Today, the outmigration of youth from the North-east to different parts of the country is one of the prime challenges that requires immediate addressal.
Upon close examination, we find that the main reasons behind this outmigration are -

  1. Lack of knowledge of opportunities and support in NER.
  2. Lack of skills in the North-east youth which further pushes them to find low-skilled opportunities in other parts of the country. This finding is supported by NSS Data of 2011-12, which shows that a mere 0.4% of the NER youth have acquired formal skills against 3.9% of the whole of India.

The North-east Region, with its multiple cultures and geographical challenges, has been a key focus area for NABARD. Project NEW is being implemented by NABFOUNDATION, a subsidiary of NABARD to promote a culture of self-employment and entrepreneurship in the North-east.

What issue is project NEW addressing?

Answer:

In short, project NEW aims to address the challenges of precision skilling and lack of entrepreneurship in NER by first understanding precisely what the aspirations of the North-east youth are.

How will project NEW help the youths of North-east?

Answer:

Project NEW will help the youth of the North-east by first mapping their livelihood aspirations and then supporting these aspirations through the requisite skilling/training programmes and facilitation of credit linkages.
Therefore, the project will take place in two phases -
In phase 1: Through the registration form, NABFOUNDATION will collate data about livelihood aspirations of the interested North-east youth.
In phase 2: NABFOUNDATION will match these livelihood aspirations to organize skilling/training programmes and facilitate credit linkages for the interested North-east youth.
These two phases together will promote a culture of self-employment and entrepreneurship in the North-east.

What makes project NEW special?

Answer:

For the first time ever, an exercise of skill mapping is being undertaken collectively for all eight states of the North-east. This is a collective effort in convergence mode and combined efforts are being made by some of the most prominent organizations and individuals in the development sector.
Moreover, Project NEW is solely targeted at the youth of the North-east, a population whose vast potential remains untapped to date.

What is the role of NABFOUNDATION in the project?

Answer:

Project NEW has been ideated and developed by NABFOUNDATION, a Section 8, not-for-profit, fully-owned subsidiary of NABARD, to facilitate entrepreneurship, credit linkages, and self-employment in NER. NABFOUNDATION is the primary managerial and organizational agency that will be running project NEW and its different facets.
